The sweet rock song that moves like a punk/alt rock song, "Beyond The Surface" is a message of reaching beyond barriers and tearing down walls that you've made for yourself based on what "the world tells you to be..." The fourth song deviates a little from the music style, as does track 5, to a bit of slower acoustic/piano driven style. But 4, "Smile," is a song that's most self- explanatory. It talks of how showing how we feel on the inside truly, should show on the outside. The fifth tune, "Promise of a Lifetime," is a song of thanks and gratefulness for the Lord. The music is taken back up a notch stylistically (though not quite to the level of ear- pounding that "Shut Me Out" was) at "Winds Of Change," which gives witness to our freedom to "[mount] up on wings like eagles" when we fully put our trust in God. "Somwhere In the Sky" has the pace and the levels back up, moving at the pace of "Beyond The Surface" while rivaling "Shut Me Out" as the hardest song on the disc thus far, and tells us "the reason for making a memory" and how "there's nothing like I've ever felt like learning how to fly." "Mistakes" is from the viewpoint of an older Christian who's made many mistakes along the way and is warning younger believers beginning the journey to "listen to history" and to "[not] make my mistake." The next one, "Push Me Away," much has the same message as the classic song "Lean On Me," as speaks to one who's too prideful to ask for help, even when they desperately need it. "Changing World" is a call to Christians to stand tough and not to give in even as all around us familiar may give way. "Million Dollar Man" rocks loud like no track has done so to this point.(but still melodic as only Kutless can do) It could very well be a modern- day viewpoint as someone like the rich young ruler Jesus told to sell all his possesions and give the money to the poor who couldn't since he was rich in the world's eyes. It is a warning to those that may come into a money- don't forget what's truly important in this world: God's message of love and salvation through Christ and his sacrifice and caring for others, believers and non- believers alike. This modern- day "rich young ruler" finds out that, even though he has "everything that money can bring," that "the grass isn't greener on this lonely side..." And the last official track, "Legacy" may very well be the signature song of the band on the album, as it rocks heavy and reminds us that in Christ, we can change what we're remembered for. Four well- crafted acoustic versions of songs on the album round off the special edition, with "Shut Me Out," "Smile," "Somewhere In The Sky" and "Changing World." Album Reviews
The title track "Hearts of the Innocent" impressively sets off the CD with a bang, and continues Kutless' theme of no-holds-barred lyrics that convey a powerful message: Can't you see, we're crushing the hearts of the innocent/ We're teaching them to fail/ And how it breaks me to see how we're living/ And punishing the ones that need us to care/ To see them hurting/ Feels like knuckles to the back of my head... Convicting and bold. Track 2 doesn't weaken at all, as the heavy guitar- infused "Shut Me Out" carries a theme very remiscent of dcTalk's "Jesus Freak": I'm not about to stop/ even change my ways/ there's nothing you can say/ That will take me away from this life/ There's nothing you can do/ To shut me up when I'm speaking the truth...
